The First Baptist Church in Childersburg will host an AARP Smart Driver class, open to the public, on Tuesday, June 24.
The class will start at 9 a.m., break for lunch, and end by about 3:30 p.m. The church is at 200 8th Ave. SW.
This course is all classroom with no tests. Completion may qualify drivers age 55 or older for insurance discounts. The certificate is good for 3 years in Alabama. Drivers must retake the class to continue their discount.
Techniques taught and updates on Alabama traffic laws apply to drivers of any age, although the AARP Driver Safety course was designed for drivers aged 50 and older. Techniques taught can bring huge savings by avoiding costs of deduct ibles and rate increases on insurance, loss of independent mobility, and injuries or loss of life resulting from a crash. Injury from an auto crash is the main cause for a person over age 50 to stop driving. An AARP survey of 1,200 participants in 2010 showed that 97 percent changed at least one key driving behavior after taking the course. Seventy-nine percent also felt that information they learned kept them from having a crash.
Fee is $20 -- $15 for current AARP members with member number at regis tration or at the beginning of the class. Fee covers a workbook that participants keep. The class is also available online for $21.95 ($17.95 for AARP members). Alabama law recognizes the online version for the insurance discount.
Preregistration is encouraged. Class is limited to 25. To register, call Mary at 256-249-4347. Tuition may be paid by check to “AARP” or in cash.
