Authorities with the Talladega County Sheriff’s Department arrested a 20-year-old male for second-degree burglary Monday.

According to Capt. Bill Kennedy, Oxford native Derek Ryan Lang used a sledgehammer to force his way into an occupied home in the 100 block of Sears Lane in Eastaboga.

Upon gaining entry to the home, Lang was involved in an altercation with one of the residents.

“He was trying to get to his girlfriend, but her dad stepped in to protect her,” Kennedy said. “He’s lucky her dad didn’t have a gun.”

Lang was taken to Regional Medical Center in Anniston, where he received treatment for his injuries. From there, he was transported to the Talladega County Jail.

District Judge Jeb Fannin set Lang’s bond at $5,000 for the offense.

Second-degree burglary is a Class B felony in Alabama and carries a sentence of 2 to 20 years in prison upon conviction.
