The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department was still investigating Tuesday the shooting death of an Anniston doctor and the stabbing of a Moody boy at a home in a new Springville subdivision. As of press time, no charges had been filed in the shooting according to the St. Clair County District Attorney’s Office.
Police responded at about 4 p.m. last Tuesday to the Crandall Crest home of Diane Duckworth, who was at work at the time, and found Aaron Harris, 23, of Moody, stabbed and Anniston Dr. John William Bryant, 56, dead from at least five gunshot wounds, St. Clair County Sheriff Terry Surles said.
John Bryant, who was an anesthesiologist at Regional Medical Center in Anniston, and Duckworth were apparently divorced last year.
Surles said preliminary investigation showed James Bryant, 17, and Harris were helping the mother move into the newly purchased home Tuesday when the John Bryant arrived.
A fight broke out between the father and son, and Harris was allegedly stabbed with a butcher knife when he tried to intervene. Harris then allegedly shot the elder Bryant with a revolver, according to authorities.
Harris was later airlifted to University Hospital in Birmingham by Lifesaver helicopter.
He was released from the hospital last Wednesday, according to UAB spokesman Hank Black.
Investigators from the sheriff’s department, the Springville Police Department, the Alabama Department of Forensic Science and the St. Clair County District Attorney’s and the Alabama Bureau of Investigation were still investigating the shooting Tuesday, officials said.
Although John Bryant lived in Lincoln, there was no documented prior history of domestic problems resulting in any criminal charges, Lincoln Police Chief Dennis Surrett said.
The family of John Bryant has apparently hired a private detective to investigate the incident, officials said.
