TUSCALOOSA — Three Alabama players have been suspended for a violation of team rules and policies.
Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban announced Friday that defensive linemen Jarran Reed and Brandon Ivory, and linebacker Tim Williams have been suspended for an undisclosed amount of time.
All three were absent during Alabama’s morning practice session, which featured most of the team’s veterans.
“Each guy can return to the team on completion of the requirement of what they have to do relative to their suspension,” Saban said. “And I have no date that I can give you that that’s going to be completed.”
Reed, a junior college transfer, was arrested this summer for driving under the influence. Ivory started 11 games last season. He finished the year with 24 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss.
Both Reed and Ivory are projected starters this season. Both worked with the first defensive line group during spring practice and on A-Day.
With Reed and Ivory out, it created more practice time for Jonathan Allen, D.J. Pettway, Dalvin Tomlinson, Darren Lake, A’Shawn Robinson and Anthony Orr.
Williams, a sophomore, played as a reserve last season. He totaled three tackles, including one tackle for loss, while seeing action in seven games.
Teammate and fellow outside linebacker Denzel Devall said Williams is a promising young player.
“He’s a great competitor, great pass rusher,” Devall said. “Just an overall great athlete. He’s great when he’s on the field.”
Saban said the team isn’t dwelling on players who aren’t in practice.
“Our focus is here, we have a lot of good players, a lot of good people, in our program,” Saban said. “A lot of guys that really do a lot of good things on and off the field. We’re certainly focused on those guys that we have here to develop them to be the best players that they can be, because they’ve demonstrated they’re willing to do the things they need to do and football is important enough to them to do the things they need to do to have a chance to be successful.”
Added Devall: “We really leave that up to coach and focus on the team now and just going out there and resurrecting our identity as the Alabama way. That’s our main goal and just focusing on this coming up season.”
