The excitement swelling around Class 3A, Region 6 is about to burst at the seams.

Piedmont, Wellborn and Glencoe are included in the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s preseason 3A poll. Piedmont is ranked second, Wellborn fifth and Glencoe eighth.

“I knew when we got in it that it was going to be tough,” Wellborn head coach Jeff Smith said. “It’s an honor to be ranked, but we still have a lot of football to play.”

With the top of the region thriving with expectations, Piedmont and Wellborn aren’t the only Calhoun County teams that appear in the polls.

Alexandria is expected to bounce back from going 3-7 last year and sits in the 5A poll at ninth. It’s the first time the Valley Cubs have been ranked in the preseason poll since 2007. Clay Central, which also moved up to 5A, is tied for fourth in the preseason poll. The Volunteers have been ranked every season since starting their program in 2012.

Saks’ jump from 3A to 4A comes with expectations of the Wildcats having another successful season after they went to the 3A state semifinals last year. They’re ranked sixth.

Fans surrounded in the premier group of Class 3A, Region 5 won’t have to wait long to see a top-10 matchup.

Wellborn travels to Glencoe to open region play, and it’s actually going to be the Panthers’ second ranked opponent of the year. Wellborn, which was ranked fourth in 2A at the beginning of last season, starts the year at Saks.

“We’re working hard, we’re going to work hard and we’re going to do what it takes to deserve that ranking,” Jeff Smith said. “It’s an honor to be ranked before the season, but it’s just flattering because we still have the season to play. There are going to be a lot of good teams that we play, and Saks is going to be a tough game. Then, of course, the games we play in our region are going to be tough.”

Piedmont’s No. 2 ranking comes right behind No. 1 Madison Academy. The Bulldogs, who started last season ranked third, played the defending state champions closing than anyone else, falling in overtime 34-33 in last year’s quarterfinals.

The Bulldogs will face a rigorous schedule in hopes of making the playoffs for the ninth straight season. They open the year against Cherokee County, then face Glencoe on Sept. 19, defending 3A state runner-up Leeds the following week, and Wellborn on Oct. 10. They close out the regular season with 4A state runner-up Oneonta.
