I don’t even know what to say.
I planned on write something about the United States men’s national team’s match against Belgium, but, I don’t know … I guess I’m speechless.
If America pulled out a win, the plan was to write about how amazing it was to head to the quarterfinals. If the U.S. came up short and dropped the match, the plan was to write about the special ride the World Cup was.
But, with Tuesday’s 2-1 extra-time loss, I don’t know what to say.
It was fun time, I guess. The team did better than anyone expected, I guess. But, overall, maybe I’m just hoping this is the beginning of what this country can do soccer-wise. Maybe my struggle to find words is because I’m waiting to see what’s next.
And, unfortunately, we’ll have to wait a while to see what’s next.
As far as the World Cup goes, I may pull the same move as four years ago and stop watching it because it’s too much of a reminder of the U.S. elimination. But, maybe I’ve also gotten past that.
I don’t know yet.
Regardless, there should be a lot of pride spreading throughout this country. I know that. For everyone who witnessed what this team accomplished over the last several weeks, I hope you enjoyed it. I hope the national team builds on it and continues to grow.
For those who missed out on the festivities this time, don’t worry, there’s always next time. I’m sure we all hope you’ll join.
