A lot of people may not know, but right now is actually the busiest part of the preps schedule.

Once Alexandria won the Class 4A state softball championship, there was one day off and then that Monday started with the process of getting together the three all-county baseball, three softball, two track, two tennis, two soccer, two golf and the all-area baseball and softball teams.

With everything going on, when the all-state softball and baseball teams snuck up on me a few days ago I saw it simply as something else to do. However, something extraordinary happened.

On Thursday night, I called Piedmont softball coach Rachel Smith to talk about sophomore Torre Roberts, who made the first team. The next day I talked to Ohatchee baseball coach Blake Jennings about freshman Jaylon Jenkins, who made first team.

That’s not the extraordinary part.

From the initial response each coach had to the off-the-record chatter after the interviews, there was pure excitement throughout both calls. It caused me to go from work mode to feeding off the happiness.

After all, there’s nothing better than seeing someone get his or her due.

Alexandria pitcher Lauren O’Dell reached out to #TeamStar on Twitter and thanked us for her making 4A honorable mention. Columnist Joe Medley said it was well-deserved, and it was.

But, don’t give us the credit. The athletes are the ones that put in the hours of work. You guys do the hard part, and we just write about it.
