TUSCALOOSA -- Alabama began implementing its game plan for the season opener versus West Virginia on Friday. The Crimson Tide wore shells (shoulder pads, helmets and shorts) and worked outside in the 96 degree weather.
“They’re a very explosive team, have a lot of team speed, score a lot of points on a lot of people last year,” Tide coach Nick Saban said of the Mountaineers. “I think when they played well defensively they were a pretty good team. … They got a lot of players back on defensive, and watching their spring game they looked very good on defense. It’s going to be a real challenge for us as all first games are, but it’s also a great barometer to see where you are. So we’re looking forward to it.”
Here are some takeaways:
--Running backs Altee Tenpenny and Tyren Jones worked in scout team jerseys. Tenpenny wore No. 2 which belongs to West Virginia running back Dreamius Smith (6-foot, 217 pounds). Jones wore No. 4 to simulate Wendell Smallwood (5-foot-11, 200 pounds).
--Dillon Lee worked with the inside linebackers. With the lack of depth at the position, Lee will likely fill multiple linebacker roles this season.
--Freshman defensive linemen Da’Shawn Hand and Josh Frazier both wore their regular numbers. With A'Shawn Robinson (knee) banged up, there’s a chance that one or both could see action in the opener.
--All of the quarterbacks wore their regular numbers. There’s a chance one or two of the signal callers could put on a scout team jersey once the media leaves.
--Some popular defensive scout team number included: No. 2 (linebacker Brandon Golson), No. 6 (cornerback Dravon Henry), No. 8 (safety Karl Joseph) No. 9 (safety KJ Dillon), No. 24 (safety Jeremy Tyler), No. 37 (linebacker Wes Tonkery), No. 45 (defensive lineman Eric Kinsey), No. 93 (defensive lineman Kyle Rose) and No. 97 (defensive lineman Noble Nwachukwu).
Up next: There is no media availability following practice. The Tide will practice on Saturday afternoon. Saban and players will speak with reporters again on Monday.
