TUSCALOOSA -- Alabama took the field for its final two-a-day of preseason practice on Wednesday. The Crimson Tide worked in full pads.
Here are takeaways:
--Offensive lineman Leon Brown (foot) is steadily working his way back into the rotation. Brown worked at right guard with the second group. He took on some contact during drills as well.
--Outside linebacker Denzel Devall (left leg) participated in drills, but isn’t moving at full speed.
--There was no sign of suspended linebacker Tim Williams. That’s 15 practices.
--Safety Geno Smith (knee) watched drills during the media's viewing period.
--Defensive lineman A’Shawn Robinson (knee), tight end Kurt Freitag (turf toe), and offensive lineman Dominick Jackson (ankle) were absent.
--As the defensive line was beginning drills, coach Bo Davis wanted to send a message. “Everything in your world is wrong. I’m right and you ain’t.” Davis is one of the more intense coaches on staff.
--Reggie Ragland and Shaun Dion Hamilton led the inside linebacker drills.
--Alabama’s nickel group remained the same. Cyrus Jones (right) and Bradley Sylve (left) were the corners, Landon Collins and Nick Perry were the safeties with Jarrick Williams at “star.” Dion Hamilton and Ragland were the linebackers.
--The second nickel group saw Trey DePriest and Reuben Foster at linebacker, Marlon Humphrey (left) and Tony Brown (right) at the cornerback spots, Laurence ‘Hootie’ Jones and Jabriel Washington were the safeties and Maurice Smith worked at “star.” Jonathan Cook shadowed Washington.
--One interesting note about the second nickel group was Jarrick Williams shadowing DePriest at linebacker. Williams is physical enough to play against the run while also having the coverage skills to defend the pass.
----The first offensive line group remained the same from left to right: Cam Robinson, Arie Kouandjio, Ryan Kelly, Alphonse Taylor and Austin Shepherd.
--In the second group, Brown was back at right guard. The rest of the second group had freshman Ross Pierschbacher at left tackle, Brandon Greene at left guard, Bradley Bozeman at center and Grant Hill at right tackle.
--Scouts from the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens and Washington Redskins watched practice.
--ESPN’s Rece Davis, Tom Rinaldi and Danny Kanell watched practice. The crew is in town doing SportsCenter hits and pieces for College GameDay.
Up next: Alabama will hold its second practice of the day around 7 p.m. There is no media availability following practice. Tide coach Nick Saban and select players will speak after Thursday’s practice.
