Braves acquire outfielder Norton from SeattleThe Braves acquired first baseman-outfielder Greg Norton from the Seattle Mariners on Monday, giving their bench a boost after placing infielder Martin Prado on the 15-day disabled list. The Mariners, who designated Norton for assignment on April 30, will receive a player to be named or cash considerations from the Braves. Norton was 7-for-16 (.435) in six games for Seattle this season. He also played seven games for Triple-A Tacoma, hitting .409. The 35-year-old Norton played with Tampa Bay in 2006 and '07. He hit .243 in 202 at-bats last season. Norton has a .253 career batting average with 82 home runs and 300 RBIs. The Braves, who were off Monday, placed Prado on the DL with a sprained left thumb and transferred reliever Peter Moylan to the 60-day DL. Prado was examined Monday and his left hand was placed in a cast. He will not need surgery but is expected to miss six to eight weeks. Prado was injured Sunday while making a fill-in start at shortstop for Yunel Escobar. Manager Bobby Cox said Sunday Moylan is facing season-ending elbow surgery. Clemens apologizes for unspecified mistakes, denies affair with McCreadyRoger Clemens apologized Monday for unspecified mistakes in his personal life but denied having an affair with a 15-year-old. The Daily News reported last week Clemens had a decade-long relationship with country star Mindy McCready that began when she was 15 and an aspiring singer. The newspaper also linked the star pitcher to former Manhattan bartender Angela Moyer and Paulette Dean Daly, a former wife of champion golfer John Daly. "Even though these articles contain many false accusations and mistakes, I need to say that I have made mistakes in my personal life for which I am sorry," Clemens said in a statement issued by spokesman Patrick Dorton. "I have apologized to my family and apologize to my fans. Like everyone, I have flaws. I have sometimes made choices which have not been right." Brian McNamee, Clemens' former trainer, accused the pitcher in December's Mitchell Report of using performance-enhancing drugs in 1998, 2000 and 2001, before players and owners agreed to ban them from baseball. Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award winner and 354-game winner, has repeatedly denied using steroids and human growth hormone and filed a defamation suit against Brian McNamee. "I believe my personal life has nothing to do with the accusations of steroid and HGH use," Clemens said. "I have already made clear that I did not use them. Now, I have been accused of having an improper relationship with a 15-year old girl. Nothing could be further from the truth." Red Sox recall righty Hansen from Triple-AThe Boston Red Sox placed outfielder Brandon Moss on the 15-day disabled list Monday and recalled right-hander Craig Hansen from Triple-A Pawtucket. Moss had an appendectomy Saturday in Boston and was released from Massachusetts General Hospital a day later. The designation is retroactive to Saturday. He's hitting .286 in six games this season with two home runs and three RBIs. Hansen is with the club for the second time this season. He was recalled April 23 and lost to Los Angeles after giving up two hits and a run in 1 1/3 relief innings. |
