U.S. Central Command is a powerful center of operations for the American military, with control over ongoing operations in world hotspots such as the Middle East, Iraq and Afghanistan. It also controls the lives of thousands of personnel, including many of those on duty from Alabama.
This special four-day series is the culmination of an intense 10-month investigation by The Anniston Star.
The stories filed come after numerous interviews with military intelligence experts, more than a dozen Freedom of Information requests, review of countless military documents and travel to Central Command's base in Tampa, Fla.
The results are troubling.
Although only one piece of a big puzzle, the problems uncovered in this report could help explain why there appear to be gaps in America’s intelligence operations concerning the war in Iraq and the other conflicts under the Central Command umbrella.
Our report of that one piece centers around the lives of three key figures, backed by numerous other intelligence sources both on and off the record.
