The roots of crime: Crime, like a weed in our landscape, will keep coming back until we eradicate its root system

Crime in Anniston has sprung forth this year like an aggressive weed. The city has seen 10 homicides in the first four months of the year -- more than all of last year. That's not counting a fatal shooting in Hobson City or several other area shootings that were not fatal. Those who ran these streets years ago say the roots of what is costing lives today have been growing beneath the surface for nearly a decade.

Where Anthony feels pressure, Natalie finds comfort. Where Natalie sees a blessing, Anthony sees only the burden that he simply cannot wait to be rid of -- if only the opportunity would present itself. Sex for teenagers can be the defining wedge issue that turns young men into liars and forces girls to keep secrets from even their best friends.

The character of a mother

A Remarkable Mother is an attempt by author Jimmy Carter, 39th president of the United States, to illustrate the extraordinary life of his mother, Miss Lillian Carter. It appears to have been written as a belated gesture of love from the son, Jimmy, to his mother, Miss Lillian.

There's something intensely spiritual about The O. Henry Prize Stories 2008. The stories selected are those you cannot touch, and yet despite their distance, the emotion each piece evokes is personal and transcendent. As with any spiritual journey, significant conflict is built into all the works.
