Donoho dug itself out of a deep hole the old-fashioned way Saturday night. The Lady Falcons overcome a dozen-point deficit with gritty full-court defense to go up one at the half and eventually on to a 64-54 victory against Fayetteville in the final of the Class 1A, Area 8 girls basketball tournament.

Handley s Ladarious Phillips runs past Cordarius Cooper (4) of Saks in this file photo. Photo: Stephen Gross/The Anniston Star/File X or O? With limitless potential, the decision for Phillips is ... which side of the ball?
Ladarious Phillips could be a brick wall for high school teams to contend with. And at a half-inch more than 6-foot and 270 pounds, it’s hard to argue with that assessment. But when it comes to college football recruiters, he’s so much more.

Doing it his way: Staying home better road to improvement for Lipscomb
Playing on an elite travel league team during the summer months and getting exposure to major league and college baseball scouts typically goes hand-in hand for most prep prospects. Ragland’s Kurt Lipscomb is proof there’s an exception to nearly every rule.

Smith Smith switches to Louisville
In reality, recruiters don’t stop doing their jobs until a kid renders his John Hancock onto a scholarship offer. So, Jacksonville offensive lineman Jake Smith’s decision to decommit from UAB and accept an offer from Louisville after visiting the Cardinals this past weekend shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to anyone.

Photo: Stephen Gross/The Anniston Star Rule allows Trinity brothers to school at home and on the court
OXFORD — Andrew Haynes was a bit fuzzy on just exactly what the rule was, but he definitely knew the effect. It meant he was allowed to play basketball for Trinity Christian. The senior guard who averages 22 points per game doesn’t actually attend the school. Instead, since he was of age for school, he’s been home schooled by his mother, Carol. So has his brother Jordan — a sophomore who is also an integral part of Trinity’s basketball team — and the rest of the Haynes siblings, five in total.

In my opinion, the words of Cherokee County coach Tripp Curry accurately summed up the essence of what it means to be chosen as a member of the this year's Dandy Dozen prep football team— the top 12 players in The Star's coverage area, regardless of position or classification.

Technically, it's not time to spring ahead. Daylight Saving Time doesn't begin until March 16. So it'll still be getting dark shortly after lunchtime for another month and a half. But as far as the prep sports scene is concerned, the end of January and the beginning of February marks the start of spring sports.

Tripp Curry's thoughts on setting goals goes against those of virtually every coach in the business. Typically, teams will set their goals during the dog days of August, when they report for fall practice and two-a-days. Put simply though, the Cherokee County coach doesn't believe in it, and doesn't follow that practice with his teams. Of course, sometimes, his policy faces an override from his players.

CENTRE — Coty Blanchard's high school football coach said it didn't take long for the multi-sport star to doubt a summer decision to commit to Mississippi State in baseball. Those regrets led Blanchard to decommit this past November and re-open his recruitment, which led to his committing to Jacksonville State on Jan. 8.

Jaron Johnson has learned to embrace the gift and the curse. Before he became Alexandria's workhorse running back, that job belonged to Terrell Stewart, his older brother. While Johnson was able to learn from the skill Stewart possessed, as evidenced by his two first-team all-state selections, Johnson also had to learn quickly how to fill the big shoes his big brother left behind.

The Star's 2009 Calhoun County Class 4A-6A Football Coach of the Year Award could have easily gone to any of the five candidates up for the honor. Oxford, Anniston, Alexandria, Saks and Jacksonville all finished in the top four of the respective regions and advanced to the AHSAA state playoffs. That made the respective coaches — John Grass, Alex Wilson, Frank Tucker, Clint Smith and Roland Houston — all worthy.
