It was good to be Taylor Hayes on Friday. The Piedmont freshman’s two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning drove in the winning run as the Bulldogs rallied to defeat Jacksonville 6-5 in the first game of a doubleheader at Piedmont.
In the nightcap, Hayes took the mound and did not allow a hit or a walk as Piedmont blanked the Golden Eagles 9-0. He struck out nine in a seven-inning, complete-game effort.
Piedmont hitters supported Hayes with six runs in the first inning and three more in the fifth. Batting leadoff, Caleb Adams was 3-for-4 with a double, the only extra-base hit of the contest. Bayley Blanchard and Jaret Prater each had a single and two RBIs. Adams and Payton Young added an RBI apiece. Easton Kirk was 2-for-2 and Tyler Lusk went 2-for-3.
In the opener, Jacksonville led 3-0 after three innings. Piedmont took a 4-3 lead after six with two runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and one in the sixth. The Eagles scored twice in the top of the seventh before Piedmont rallied again.
Chris Elias tossed the first six innings for Jacksonville and allowed four runs, two earned, with five strikeouts. Piedmont’s two runs off Sid Thurmond in the seventh were unearned. Thurmond, Peyton Sims, Jackson Bell, Lavonte LaCount and Colton Clark scored for Jacksonville. Chance Marbut drove in two runs and Bell had one RBI.
Piedmont’s Peyton Whitten went the distance for the win. He surrendered five hits and five walks but just two earned runs while striking out four. Whitten and Hayes each had two singles for the Bulldogs. Prater, Adams and Kirk had an RBI apiece in addition to Hayes’ game winner.
Piedmont will host Cleburne County today.
Faith Christian 17, Sacred Heart 1:
Jonathan Twilley was 3-for-4 with four runs and three RBIs for Faith Christian, which won its second straight game.
Slade Owens was 3-for-4 with four runs and an RBI. Jack Seals was 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI, while London Huie went 2-for-3, scored twice and drove in three runs.
Jameson Thacker got the pitching win, working two innings and striking out six.
Faith Christian (2-7) will play Monday at home against Ragland.
Ohatchee 17, Saks 7:
Ohatchee delivered 11 hits, including 10 singles and a triple by Michael Cherry. The Indians scored 17 times but left 14 runners on base.
Dillon Parker was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, while Caleb Dickie went 2-for-3. Tristan Woodall was 2-for-3, while Zach Mangum was 1-for-3, and both drove in three runs.
Dickie was the winning pitcher. He worked four innings, struck out six and gave up only one hit.
Ohatchee (4-7) will play Woodland on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
Albertville 10, Oxford 3:
Kaylynn Garrett went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Oxford, while Jenn Turner was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Oxford (13-6) will face Alexandria at home Monday at 6:30 p.m.
Donoho girls 4, Anniston 0:
Lily Wiedmer scored three goals for Donoho, while Maryam Salame added the first varsity goal of her career.
Sonny Jenkins had two assists. Peyton Suco was in goal for the Falcons (5-2), who play Monday against Moody.
Donoho boys 6, Anniston 0:
Mitchell Baker scored four times for Donoho, while Schuyler Buckner and Tej Patel each added one. Patel’s goal came on a penalty kick.
Shea Buckner, Histon Owsley and Mac Love each had an assist.
Donoho (3-2) will play Moody on Monday.
