The Birmingham News reports that state superintendent Joe Morton expects Alabama to have 2,827 fewer teachers, administrators and support personnel next year than the current year.

Morton is on Capitol Hill supporting federal legislation to give state public school programs an additional $23 billion to avoid teacher layoffs at the end of summer.

From the $23 billion federal pool of education money to help fight that prospect, Alabama would tentatively receive $346 million for K-12 and higher education spending. Of that, $262 million would be only for K-12 use.
