Anniston police are investigating an alleged Sunday afternoon shooting which sent a woman to a local hospital.

Anniston police Lt. Fred Forsythe said shift officers received a call around 2 p.m. Sunday from a resident who heard gunshots near the area of Mulberry Avenue and Fourth Street. Upon arrival at the scene, officers encountered a crowd of people who immediately left the area, Forsythe said.

Police interviewed no one at the scene, Forsythe said.

Around 3 p.m. officers were called to Regional Medical Center to interview a woman being treated for a gunshot wound to her left shoulder, Forsythe said.

The 19-year-old woman told officers she was walking in the area of Mulberry Avenue when she heard gunshots and felt pain in her shoulder, according to a police report. She said she didn’t know how she was struck, Forsythe said.

Police are conducting a follow-up interview with the victim today, Forsythe said, and are investigating the area.
