Anniston police say a woman charged with domestic violence on Thursday stabbed her roommate in the leg with a steak knife.

Officers charged Janay Marie Hawkins, 21, of Anniston, with second-degree domestic violence, a felony.

Anniston police Capt. Allen George said officers were called to a home on the 300 block of Elm Street around 8 p.m. George said the 23-year-old victim told police when they arrived that she and Hawkins were arguing over food and the victim wanted Hawkins to leave.

While Hawkins was gathering her property, George said, the victim was sitting on the couch and an officer was standing nearby. As the victim was taking her house key off Hawkins’s key ring, Hawkins walked toward the victim and stabbed her, George said. The woman suffered a cut to her left leg from a 6-inch steak knife, according to a police report.

The nearby officer immediately arrested Hawkins, the captain said. The victim was taken to Regional Medical Center. George said she required stitches, but he was unsure how many. The woman is expected to recover from her injuries.

Hawkins was in the Calhoun County Jail this afternoon. Bond is set at $30,000. A court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 30.
