Michael Bachelor, 57, was airlifted to UAB Hospital in Birmingham after being pulled from a fire on Parker Boulevard that started around 3:30 a.m., according to a Weaver police.
Bachelor’s mother, Joy, 75, died of smoke inhalation from the fire, said Calhoun County assistant coroner Pat Adrian.
Bachelor’s 3-year-old grandson was also in the house at the time of the fire and was transported to UAB. State Fire Marshal Ed Paulk said the child suffered from smoke inhalation. His condition today is unknown.
UAB Hospital staff told The Star Wednesday afternoon that Bachelor had been discharged from the hospital, but as of 9:30 a.m. today Bachelor was listed as in critical condition. Kevin Storr, who works in media relations for UAB, said he could not speculate as to the reason for the incorrect information.
