A veteran’s military award service was given by the Major General Patrick R. Cleburne Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy to present eight military medals at the Calhoun County Public Library. The awards were presented to honor men and women who served in the armed forces and also had an ancestor who served honorably for the Confederate cause.

Medals were presented by each award presented: World War II Fred R. Lett, sergeant, U.S. Army; James H. Gilreath Jr., private, U.S. Army, accepted by his daughter Alice Duckett; Posthumous Korean War: John Lewis Watson, corporal, U.S. Army, accepted by his wife Mrs. Aline Watson; Vietnam Conflict War: Joe Berl Duckett, captain, U.S. Marine Corps; National Defense Service Medal: Claude Gholson Miller, staff sergeant 1st class, Vietnam Conflict, U.S. Army; Rhonda Mayfield Morehead, hospital corpsman 2nd class, Persian Gulf War, U.S. Navy; National Defense – Posthumous: John Herman Spears, specialist corporal technician, U.S. Army, accepted by his wife Mrs. Laura Spears; Expeditionary Service Medal: Wayne Bonner, corporal, Korea, U.S. Army; Meritorious Award – Posthumous: Victor Killian, WWII, machinist's mate 3rd class, U.S. Navy, accepted by his son Mike Killian.
