Jeff Hansen of The Birmingham News reports of a UAB researcher that has made an international call for new antibiotics. Dr. Richard Whitley called for the development of at least ten new drugs by 2020 that would replace current antibiotics that are losing effectiveness.
Whitley, who is president of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, said two trends -- the increase in infections by bacteria that are resistant to a wide variety of antibiotics, and a shortage of potential new drugs being developed by pharmaceutical companies -- have created a "dangerous imbalance."
