On Aug. 18, I noticed a dog running across Quintard Avenue near Greenbrier-Dear Road. I luckily tempted the dog off the highway with dinner leftovers. We called Anniston Police, but the officer who arrived said even if he wanted to help, there is nothing he could do since Animal Control was closed until Monday. Later, I saw a small terrier further down Alabama 21. The following afternoon, I saw two dogs near Sonic and Oxford City Hall on U.S. 78.
Approximately 8,000 pets are euthanized in Calhoun County annually and 80,000 across Alabama. If this breaks your heart, fixing your pets and adopting from shelters or rescue groups helps animal overpopulation.
A new group called Alabama Voters for Responsible Animal Legislation (AVRAL) is a grassroots, non-partisan political-action committee formed to advance the passage of legislation favorable to the welfare of companion animals and to support political candidates who favor such legislation and policies.
