MONTGOMERY — Ragland’s bats turned cold as morning went to afternoon, resulting in a 2-0 loss to top-ranked Kinston 2-0 in a winners' bracket game in the Class 1A state tournament.

Kinston first run came in the fourth inning when Anna Elmore scored on an error. An insurance run came in the sixth when Madison Weeks scored on a passed ball after singling and scoring second.

Fourth-ranked Ragland’s best opportunity came to score in the top of the fourth inning when Kailey Echols was thrown out at third, trying to advance from first on a groundout by Peyton Beardon.

Echols, Leah Byers, Callie Kay and Makenley Oliver all recorded a hit.

Ragland returns to the field Saturday morning, facing the winner of Fayetteville-Pleasant Home in the elimination bracket.
