So let me be the first Alabama fan to salute the Auburn Tigers here in The Star. What happened to you this year and where you came from is miraculous. When my wife and I left last year’s game in Tuscaloosa, I had never seen such sad faces on so many orange and blues. And though I want Alabama to beat Auburn in everything, it does not make me giddy to beat the Tigers 49-0. So go get ’em, guys, and let’s keep the national championship trophy in Alabama for a fifth year in a row.
Memories tell me that Auburn in 1972 ruined Alabama’s season in a similar way. Auburn and then Texas in the Cotton Bowl were our last two hurdles to another No. 1 ranking. We somehow found a way to lose both games by a whisker, and I can still hear Coach Paul Bryant’s words echo as I close my eyes. Simple, really … “Show your class! Alabama players and Alabama people always show their class! It is what makes us, us! Don’t ever forget that! You will be wearing the Alabama brand for the rest of your lives!”
We have won a lot of games since Nick Saban came our way, and Alabama, with or without him, will win many more. What Auburn fans do is up to them, but how we all act is up to us. So keep the humble pies in the fridge and let’s eat plenty until class takes its place on the menu.
