Across the country and in communities like those in Talladega, Calhoun and surrounding counties — government employees at all levels protect and serve our nation. To honor these workers and their service, May 5-11 is designated as Public Service Recognition Week. I hope everyone will join in thanking these people not just in this but every week of the year.

I’d like to call special attention to 50,000 active, federal and Postal Service workers in Alabama. Alabama has the fourth-largest number of federal employees among nine states in the Southeast — behind Florida, Georgia and North Carolina. Alabama also has 56,000 federal retirees. The salaries and annuities of active and retired federal workers give the whole state’s economy a huge boost.

Federal employees play a key role in making our daily lives much safer and more pleasant.

As we go through the week, please consider how government employees make our lives better. When you see one of those employees, thank him or her.
