Since Gov. Robert Bentley is over 65, I expect he used Medicare during his October stay in the hospital for hernia surgery. Despite enjoying that government-run program, Bentley cannot bring himself to expand Medicaid for the working poor in Alabama. By not expanding Medicaid, he leaves our working poor without medical care, and in the meantime, taxes in Alabama will help fund the 25 states that are proceeding with implementation.
Our low-wage workers are caught between a rock and a hard place. Since they work, they do not qualify for the existing Medicaid program, but neither do they earn enough to pay the high cost of medical insurance and still feed their families. If a family member is this group is unfortunate enough to have a serious illness, Doctor Bentley’s prescription is apparently: Heal thyself and good luck.Carl Summers
