Re “Welfare’s rat maze” (Jonah Goldberg column. Jan. 25):

Will President Obama’s health-care plan be the final nail in a closed national coffin?

The permanently successful parasite of today is neither gentle nor quiet but belligerent and demanding with no desire to conceal its moral defects and weaknesses. Neo-communist, totalitarian, leftist liberals insist that massive government must do more and more to assist the irresponsible, sedentary, fecund poor. But what are the limits of the welfare state? What are the limits of “fairness?”

How are we to deal with the alarming and ever-increasing numbers of career parasites who bloc vote? How are we to deal with a culture of self-destructive attitudes and behavior? By feeding it with a caravan of entitlements that empty the Treasury and crowd our prison systems … or by starving it.
