At 12:24, the weather service issued a flood advisory for Calhoun and Talladega counties, as well as northwestern Clay County. Streets and roads, especially in low-lying areas, may become covered with water, the advisory says.
The weather service said storms earlier in the day dropped 1 to 2 inches of rain, and an additional 1 to 2 inches is possible. The flood advisory is set to expire at 2:15 p.m.
Storm runoff was expected to elevate small creeks and streams and to pond in urban areas, on highways, streets and underpasses, the advisory said.
Earlier, a severe thunderstorm warning for Calhoun County and some neighboring areas expired at 12:15 this afternoon. The warning had been issued by the National Weather Service office in Birmingham.
After the warning expired, the weather service issued a statement that said the storm was expected to remain strong as it moved toward Saks, Rainbow City and Childersburg. Wind gusts up to 50 mph are expected, according the weather service's advisory statement.
The weather service’s warning said a line of storms was moving east from Moody at about 11:37 a.m., with winds in excess of 60 mph. Damage was reported in Moody, the warning said.
The warning area included southwestern Calhoun County, southern St. Clair County, northeastern Shelby County and northern Talladega County.
The weather service said winds in between 60 and 70 mph will break large tree limbs and cause some damage, especially to smaller structures. The warning directed people in the storm's path to move to interior rooms on buildings’ lowest floors.
