MONTGOMERY — Less than a month after winning the Class 2A girls state championship, Woodland coach Larry Strain was named the coach of the year while state tournament MVP Leah Strain got a first-team all-state nod, her third in the last three years.

In addition to the father-daughter duo, four other area stars made first or second team on the squads selected by the Alabama Sports Writers Association, and three made honorable mention. The teams was released today by the ASWA.

While Strain averaged 21.3 points, seven rebounds and 5.2 assists per game, she was not the only local player to make the first team. Anniston’s Quanetria Bolton got the nod in Class 4A after averaging 23 points and 13 rebounds per game.

BreAnna Thompson of Piedmont was named to the second team in Class 3A after averaging 19 points and 7.1 rebounds per contest. Also in 3A, Weaver’s Chris English received his second consecutive all-state nod, being named to the second team after averaging 23.6 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.4 steals per game.

A North-South All-Star game selection, English’s points per game average was the fifth highest in the state in any classification. Trae Dunson of Handley got a second-team nod in Class 4A after finishing third in the state in overall points, tied with English at 660. Dunson averaged 20.6 points and 3.4 rebounds per game.

There were also three players that received honorable mention recognition. Des Curry and Sharon Osterbind of Class 4A Jacksonville made the list while Woodland’s Shanna Strain was also an honorable mention.
