Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan's lack of judicial experience is "troubling" and represents "a weakness in her background," Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Mobile, said Monday.
"I just believe if you put somebody on the U.S. Supreme Court, they ought to be deeply steeped in real law practice," said Sessions, the top-ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee. "Some judges have a gift for going to the heart of the matter, being able to write with clarity, and being able to be principled, to control their personal emotions and rule fairly and objectively time after time after time. Normally you'd look to appoint someone like that on our highest court -- somebody's that's proven."
