Whether Paul Ryan, the GOP vice presidential nominee, ran a sub-three hour marathon two decades ago is irrelevant to this fall’s campaign.

Ryan first said he ran a marathon in 2 hours and 50-something minutes. Fact-checkers determined that was incorrect. (It was more than four hours.) Ryan has since corrected his mistake.

But, oh, how the Democrats are having fun at Ryan’s expense. And who better than Sen. Harry Reid to throw the latest stone?

Reid’s the perfect choice: He’s a Democrat, and he’s a veteran marathoner who has 15 marathons to his name. One of them was a 3-hour, 16-minute race in the 1972 Boston Marathon.

That won’t win Boston, but it’ll beat many in the field — including Ryan, to whom facts may be little more than a fuzzy recollection.
