Police are searching across state lines for a man who robbed an Oxford bank Tuesday afternoon, according to Oxford police.

Eli Scrutchins, 39, of Woodstock, Ga. allegedly entered the Farmers and Merchants Bank at 35 Ali Way Tuesday around 2:45 p.m. and demanded money from a bank employee, Oxford police Chief Bill Partridge said.

Partridge said Scrutchins was armed with a revolver. A bank employee gave Scrutchins an undisclosed amount of money and Scrutchins fled, the chief said.

According to Partridge the bank employee “did exactly what she was supposed to do.”

“You never argue with a robber,” Partridge said. “You comply with his demands and be a good witness.”

Police identified Scrutchins using bank surveillance and believe he fled to Georgia.

Oxford police were working Wednesday with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Georgia law enforcement to search for Scrutchins.

Scrutchins will be charged with felony first-degree robbery, Partridge said.
