OXFORD — The second suspect in a May robbery of the Oxford Family Loan Inc. was in police custody in Rochester, N.Y., Tuesday.

U.S. Marshals on Saturday apprehended 27-year-old Gerald Anton Griffin, also known by the alias “New York,” in the state that shares his nickname.

Oxford police have been searching for Griffin since the May 31 robbery of the Family Loan at 1225 Snow St.

Investigators said Griffin matches the description of the man who entered the store around 9:30 a.m. May 31 and went through the formalities of filling out a loan application before pulling out a gun and demanding money from the employee.

Griffin left the store with an undisclosed amount of cash before escaping in a red Chevrolet Cavalier, police said.

Lt. L.G. Owens said that Cavalier was driven by 26-year-old Willie Joe Mathis Jr., who was arrested June 1 on charges related to the robbery.

Griffin was facing extradition to Calhoun County from Rochester Tuesday afternoon on a charge of felony first-degree robbery.

His bond information was not available Tuesday.

Owens said Oxford police immediately enlisted the help of the U.S. Marshals after they realized that Griffin, an Anniston resident, was not in the Calhoun County area.
