Powell will show a selection of clothing from his fall/winter line as part of a charity fashion show at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Buckhead Theater in Atlanta. The show is in conjunction with the fourth annual Battle of the Models and Designers competition staged by ProFashional Alliance.
In February, Powell was one of nine up-and-coming designers competing in the annual Oscars Designer Challenge. His winning gown, which he named “The Black Swan,” was worn by a model during the Academy Awards ceremony. Powell appeared on TV on the red carpet and got to meet one of his personal heroes, designer Valentino.
After his win in Los Angeles, Powell returned to Chicago, where he staged a sold-out fashion show, moved into a new studio and found himself with many new clients — including Rashied Davis of the Chicago Bears.
It was one of the few times that Powell has designed men’s clothing. Until now, he has specialized in one-of-a-kind evening gowns. But he plans to expand next year, launching his first menswear collection for fall of 2012.
That’s the collection he hopes to bring to Piedmont next spring. He made a promise that, if he won the Oscars Designer Challenge, he would come home and put on a fashion show, and he intends to keep that promise.
