Simply put, Lexie Higgins is athletic.

The Oxford High senior has played and started on the volleyball team since she was in seventh grade and also played on the varsity basketball team since 10th grade.

However, the softball field is where she shines brightest. A Samford commitment, she plays shortstop and bats leadoff. This spring, she will enter her six year as a starter for Oxford coach Wendy McKibbin, who also is her volleyball coach.

Higgins started playing baseball at age 4 and moved to softball four years later. During the summer, she plays for the Birmingham Thunderbolts travel team.

After a recent volleyball practice, Higgins sat down with Anniston Star preps writer Brandon Miller and spiked 10 questions:

Question: When did everyone start calling you Lexie?

Answer: My name is Brittany Alexis Higgins, and Lexie comes from Alexis. When I was little, everyone started calling me Lexie. My mom swore it would never happen, but it actually started really quick. She says if she could go back she wouldn’t have named me Brittany.

Q: What’s your most memorable moment in any sport?

A: I hit a grand slam two years ago in the area championship against Grissom. It was pretty cool. It put us way ahead. We ended up winning 11-4.

Q: What is your favorite thing about Oxford High School?

A: I love the atmosphere. I’ve known all these kids since I was younger and I’ve kind of grown up with them. My class is really close and we hang out a lot and go places. This place is like home. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.

Q: Do you prefer playing at home or on the road?

A: Home. Like I said, my class is really close, so a lot of my friends will come and support us. It’s nice to see them back there and yelling at us. It keeps us going.

Q: What is the best present you have ever received?

A: My car. I got it for Christmas two years ago. My mom and dad bought me a Hummer H3. I cried. It’s awful, and they have it on video.

Q: What was the first cell phone you ever had?

A: It was a flip phone from Nextel, and I loved it. I was 10 years old and thought I was the coolest kid ever. It was cool to have a phone so I wanted one. I got to push to talk all of my friends and stuff. It was pretty cool.

Q: What’s your favorite position of any sport you’ve played?

A: I love shortstop and I love outside hitter. The sports I play are my favorite and I can’t pick between them, but I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. I like both positions because I like the field and taking care of so much on the field or court.

Q: What’s the biggest trophy you’ve ever won?

A: It comes up to my hip. I was playing with Neat Heat in Alexandria and we won a travel softball tournament when I was 12 and I did well that week so I got to keep it.

Q: Are there any other sports you’d like to try?

A: Honestly, if I had to try another sport it’d be golf because I want to play golf. I’d love to play golf. When I was little, I’d follow my dad around and play, but that’s it. But I get mad so no one would be able to feed off of me.

Q: What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done during a game?

A: In softball, I’ve hit my coach. I was hitting, swung, hit the ball foul and it hit her in the thigh. It was McKibbin. It hurt her pretty bad, but she’s fine now. In volleyball, I was running to get a ball and once jumped over the bench.
