No war on religious freedom

While attending Mass, the deacon (an otherwise nice fellow) admonished the congregation that there was a war on religious freedom and that we need to fight for our right to practice our religion. What nonsense!

There is no war on religious freedom. The current administration wants to encourage family planning by making contraception available to all, at no charge through their health insurance. The First Amendment to the Constitution is clear that the Congress “shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or the free exercise thereof.” Under the current provisions of the “Affordable Care Act,” no one’s religious freedom is compromised, nothing states that a person must use contraceptives, everyone can choose based on their religious beliefs.

Neither President Obama nor Congress could pass exceptions that respect a particular religion’s beliefs. Many religions want to do what they cannot do through their religious teaching, and that is to control a woman’s choice to “reproduce or not.” They are taking a stand that will maintain the current high number of abortions in this country.
