JACKSONVILLE — Qua Boyd had a game-high 14 rebounds and 16 points for Lafayette on Thursday night in the Bulldogs’ 51-43 win over rival No. 2 Lanett in the Class 2A Northeast Regional boys final at Pete Mathews Coliseum on the campus of Jacksonville State.

“Two weeks ago, I was like, ‘We’ve got to beat Lanett. We’ve got to beat Lanett,’” Boyd said. “I couldn’t sleep. I was going to bed at 3 o’clock in the morning, waking up at 6, going to school, practicing late. And, come tonight, I had to do what I had to do.”

After Lafayette led nearly the entire game, Lanett’s Desmond Stevenson tied the game 41-41 making one of two free throws with 2:37 left. From that point on, Lanett was held scoreless while the Bulldogs made eight free throws before Boyd’s threw down a reverse slam with five seconds left to put the exclamation point on the first Lafayette win over the Panthers this season in four attempts.

“I really can’t talk about it,” Boyd said about the dunk. “All that was going through my mind was, ‘Final Four, Final Four.’”

Lafayette’s win advances the Bulldogs to the Final 48 for the first time since 2002. Lafayette will play the winner of Elba-Washington County, which will be played tomorrow at 5:20 p.m.

“Coming off this win means so much to our community,” Bulldogs coach Obadiah Threadgill said. “These kids play so hard. We watch so much film, and they work so hard and I’m so hard on them. They deserve everything they get.”
