For the past two years, Music in May has offered weekly concerts each Thursday throughout the month, said Tammy Perry, director of Heflin’s Parks and Recreation Department. The number of people who attended varied each week from 50 to 100 to 200 depending on what other activities may have been scheduled for that evening. There were often school related activities such as baseball games that drew people away from the concerts, said Heflin City Clerk Shane Smith.
The move to a weekend event will make Music in May feel more like a music festival, Perry said.
This year, the fun will all take place on Friday evening and Saturday with a slate of concerts ranging from the Cleburne County High School Jazz Band on Friday to Deadfields, an Atlanta-based band, the anchor band that will close the festival, Smith said. As of Friday, eight musicians and groups had confirmed, he added.
“We’ll have everything from Rock to country to gospel,” Smith said.
As before, vendors will set up on Vickery Street in front of the courthouse. There will be mostly food vendors but some arts and crafts vendors may also set up, he said.
Alabama Power and the Heflin Arts Council are sponsoring the event with financial donations and the Arts Council will also be selling raffle tickets for a summer gift basket, Smith said.
Wendell Wood, manager of Alabama Power in Heflin, said Alabama Power was a sponsor last year as well.
“We try to be good corporate citizens,” Wood said.
When an event comes along that will benefit a lot of people in the community, such as Music in May, the company wants to be involved, he said.
Smith said the goal of Music in May is to bring people to Heflin’s downtown and to just provide something fun for area residents.
“Just come to have a good time and be a part of the community,” Smith said.
