“Defense played great,” Munford head coach Will Wagnon said. “We gave a little ground here and there.
“When we got our backs against the wall, we didn’t break down and we didn’t give up a score.”
Wagnon spoke highly of several of his defenders afterward.
“Jay Scales played an outstanding game,” he said. “Earl Moss, Austin Stephens, Tavon Lawson. All those defenders had an excellent game.”
Senior cornerback Jay Scales managed to grab an interception in the final quarter.
The defense did not steal all of the glory from the field.
Senior quarterback Monteo Garrett gained 230 all-purpose yards. He led the Lions in rushing with 109 yards with a touchdowns. In addition, he passed for 121 yards and three more scores.
His rushing touchdown came on a run of 3 yards. His three passing touchdowns all went to junior wide receiver CJ Chapman on gains of 30, 30 and 18 yards.
The Lions also scored on a 15-yard run by Tavon Lawson and a field goal.
“First of all, I want to thank my coaching staff and my offensive line,” Garrett said. “We have a motto: We play like a champion. Win every rep, everyday and every play.
“If we do that, winning will take care of itself.”
Wagnon said Garrett entered the game banged up.
“He’s a great football player,” Wagnon said. “He had to play through some pain tonight but he did and was outstanding. He played a great game tonight.”
Alexandria head coach Frank Tucker was not shy about praising his opponent’s defense but added that his Valley Cubs missed some opportunities.
“Munford played a great game on defense,” Tucker said. “We had some mistakes but sometimes the other team makes you make those mistakes. They’ve got a great defense but we never helped ourselves much.”
The Valley Cubs are now 2-4, including 2-2 in Class 4A, Region 5.
“We’ve got a long list” of things to work on, Tucker said.
“You could write a whole page of things we need to work on right now,” he added. “If we’ve got any character, we’ll come back and be a better team.”
The Valley Cubs were led on offense by junior running back Alton Davis with 63 yards rushing.
Munford (5-1, 4-0 in Region 5) and Alexandria return to action Friday. Munford will hit the road and play at Hokes Bluff, and Alexandria will be at home against Cleburne County.
