In Mobile, Danny Hocutt is now known because police investigators believe he was murdered, then buried in his backyard by a wife who continued to cash his government benefit checks. But Hocutt also starred in one of the most dramatic courtroom scenes in the city’s history.
Police dug up Hocutt’s body from his backyard in 2009 after his wife told police she had shot him some 3 years earlier. He had a checkered past that included frequent brushes with the law and post-traumatic stress disorder following a tour of duty in the Vietnam War. In 1995, he went on trial on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.
