Mobile City Council approves 1 cent sales tax hike

MOBILE — The Mobile City Council on Tuesday approved a 1 cent sales tax increase this morning by a vote of 5-2.

City Council members Fred Richardson, William Carroll, Jermaine Burrell, Reggie Copeland and Gina Gregory voted for the increase. Council members John Williams and Connie Hudson voted against it.

The tax increase will take effect June 1 and will expire Sept. 30, 2011. During the 17-month run, the increase is projected to bring in $35 million.
