Today, Annistonians should value these recent words from City Councilman Herbert Palmore.

“Our arguing cost us money. Our arguing cost us progress.”

Have truer words been spoken in the last three-plus years about the Anniston City Council?

In fairness to Palmore, a smidgen of context is needed. On Monday, the council met to divvy up budget requests from outside agencies. There were agreements and there were arguments, the usual fare.

But tensions rose rapidly over funding for Spirit of Anniston, the downtown development group. Mayor Gene Robinson went on the offensive, calling the council “mediocre.” Palmore, who, like Robinson, wasn’t re-elected, stood up to the mayor’s bluster.

And he spoke the truth.

Anniston’s 2008 council was an abject failure. The reasons are clear. Credit Palmore for speaking out. The truth hurts.
