Jeremy McGatha and Jaylon Ellison used two runs of three consecutive birdies Sunday to stay ahead of their challengers and eventually win the Calhoun County Two-Man Championship at Cane Creek Golf Course.

The long-time tournament partners shot a final-round 64 to finish the event at 19-under-par 125. They won by four shots over Matt Rogers and Gary Wigington, who shot a final-round 65.

The winners got off to a fast start, opening with three straight birdies in the modified scramble format. They pulled away with three straight birdies in the middle of the back nine.

“We started off like we wanted to, then I don’t know if we felt too comfortable or what,” McGatha said. “Toward the middle we said we’ve got to get going or this could get ugly.

“You can’t ever count on Matt and Twig (Wigington). We had to finish strong or we might lose this thing.”

Ott and Dalton Chandler finished third at 132.

Frank Brady and Daniel Black won the First Flight (141). Mark Durden and Jackson King won the Second Flight (147). Terry Cobb and Michael Ray won the Third Flight (157). Ott Chandler (No. 3) and Matt Miller (No. 15) won closest-to-the-pin prizes.

The tournament marked the traditional beginning of the Calhoun County golf season. The first event of the Calhoun County Golf Tour is April 6-7 at Cider Ridge Golf Club in Oxford.
