On Tuesday, I turned off the ringer on the phone in the bedroom, because the Windows Technical Support team from India kept calling and waking up my husband.

On Wednesday, a message popped up on the phone in the kitchen, even though I was standing right there and I could have sworn the phone never rang.

On Thursday, my husband tried calling home from the grocery store, but the phone just rang and rang and rang and rang. Later, when he asked the children why they didn’t answer the phone, they answered, “We didn’t hear it.”

On Saturday, my cell phone stopped working. This was intentional. I am on a pay-as-you-go rate plan, and I had let my account run out of money.

My phone had recently developed a mind of its own and was charging me several times a day for phone calls I was not making. I never make phone calls. I hate talking on the phone.

When I called the phone company to complain, they said it was because they were upgrading their cell towers. To fix my phone, all I needed to do was upgrade to a more expensive rate plan.

I suspect this would have been their solution no matter what my problem.

I didn’t want to upgrade to a new rate plan right away, because I still had money on my old rate plan, and the phone company won’t let you roll over money into a new rate plan. Because they’re the phone company.

If there’s anything I hate more than making phone calls, it’s wasting money.

To make things worse, the phone company will not let you upgrade to a new rate plan online. I was going to have to call and talk to the phone company again.

On Sunday, the youth group leader from church called to say it was time to come pick up my son. She wound up calling my daughter’s cell phone, because my phone wasn’t working.

On Monday, I had a whole morning free to spend on the phone with the phone company to get my cell phone working again.

I picked up the landline to call. The landline was dead.

I tried to put in a repair request via the phone company’s website, but I couldn’t get it to work. This apparently is the phone company’s way of encouraging us to use the phone.

I couldn’t use the landline to call the phone company to fix my cell phone. I couldn’t use my cell phone to call the phone company to fix my landline. It was like that time I was cleaning the kitchen and mopped myself into a corner.

I gave in and added money to my cell phone, then used it to call the phone company.

I had to step out on the back porch, because I couldn’t get a clear signal inside the house.

They were currently experiencing a high volume of calls.

I’ve still got $9 left in my cell phone account. Who wants to talk?
