Ledbetter worked at the Goodyear Tire plant in Gadsden for almost 20 years and claims she was consistently paid less than her male counterparts, which led to her filing a lawsuit against the company.
“It’s a story that should be told,” Ledbetter said recently in a phone interview from her home in Jacksonville. “It inspires people, it tells them that you can stand up for yourself and make a change.”
So which Hollywood celebrity has the grits to play Ledbetter? Here are a few suggestions from us here at The Star and our Facebook followers:
She already has experience in this role — remember “Norma Rae”? — so we know she can fight for her rights. She’s about the right age now, but she might not be able to pull of 1980s Ledbetter.
Julia Roberts - Most popular pick
For the glam factor, we vote for Julia. Not only is she drop-dead gorgeous, but she knows how to play the tough woman, like she did in “Erin Brockovich.” She also received the most votes in our Facebook poll.
Fighting the bigwigs at Goodyear in court should be nothing for Dern after fighting off a Tyrannosaurus Rex in “Jurassic Park.”
Dolly Parton - Relates to the role
Workin’ nine to five, what a way to make a living. She’s played the role of the lowly woman in the workplace and she’s a Southerner, so Dolly is a natural fit — but we use the word “natural” lightly.
Meryl Streep - Lilly’s pick
She looks the most like Ledbetter, and she’s also played the role of a fighter, as a cancer victim in the hit Showtime series “The Big C.”
• Jane Krakowski
• Meg Ryan
• Jane Fonda
• Helen Hunt
• Ellen Burstyn
• Gena Rowlands
