Re “Freedom for all” (Speak Out, Jan. 16):

I would beg letter writer James Nix to make his argument for gun rights without cloaking it in religion. Says he, “… The sacrifice of one well justifies the freedom of the multitudes. As I was taught, and truly believe, Jesus did just that.”

Mr. Nix, those innocent children and their teachers did not offer themselves as a sacrifice. That morning the children were in classrooms, sitting on little chairs, learning to read. They had not been asked to step out into the hall and offer their little lives to guarantee your unlimited access to weapons. In their final moments, they were terrified and huddling in the completely inadequate shelter of closets and teachers’ arms. The idea that their parents offered them as a sacrifice to assure your personal gun rights is utterly appalling.

This was no sacrifice; it was mass murder.

Let us have the Second Amendment debate on reasonable, rational terms. The Second Amendment is not the basis of the Christian faith, or vice versa. Leave Jesus out of it — he never owned a weapon. Except maybe a hammer and saw.
