Jacksonville sweeps Ragland in volleyball

JACKSONVILLE — It was a fitting start for the area’s most dominant team the past few seasons.

The Jacksonville Lady Golden Eagles swept Ragland in impressive fashion (25-5, 25-21, 25-7) Thursday at home to open the season.

Nicole Penny led the Eagles with 16 assists and three aces. Allender Doggette was good in all phases of the game, notching six kills, two aces, two digs, one block and one assist.

Haley Jackson led the team with 10 kills and six blocks. Katie Neisler added six kills and three blocks.

Lana Bell recorded five kills, four digs, two aces and one block, and Amy Estes finished with six assists, two digs and one ace.

Jacksonville (1-0) will be back in action this weekend in the Capitol City Jubilee.

Alexandria 2, Ohatchee 0; Alexandria 2, Wellborn 0 — The Lady Valley Cubs swept both Ohatchee (25-12, 25-13) and Wellborn (25-20, 25-12) in Ohatchee on Thursday.

Against Ohatchee, Nicole Burgess led the Valley Cubs in assists with 13.

Morgan Read recorded a match-high five kills, and Kayla Howard led the squad with four digs.

Against Wellborn, Burgess finished with 15 assists. Molly McNew led the team with six kills, and Howard had five digs.

Alexandria (2-0) plays in Southside this weekend.

Saks 2, Sardis 0; Saks 2, Gaston 0 — At Gaston, Saks swept its way past Sardis (25-18, 25-6) and the host Lady Bulldogs (25-13, 25-20).

Taylor West’s big day led the way. West had 14 kills, 17 digs and four blocks. Destinee Briskey chipped in with 13 kills, 13 digs and one block. Valentina Cuevas had 32 assists, nine digs and four aces. And Katy Stephens had five aces and seven digs.

Saks (2-0) hosts the eight-team Lady Wildcat Invitational on Saturday. Saks will play Springville at 9 a.m.

Donoho 2, Handley 0; Donoho 2, Ranburne 0 — The Lady Falcons had no trouble with either Handley or host Ranburne during Thursday’s tri-match, sweeping both teams.

Donoho defeated Handley 25-6, 25-1, and Ranburne 25-13, 25-8.

Rachel Matson led the way with 15 kills on the day. Grace Fink had 13 kills, Allie Cegrest had four kills, Katie Swinford had nine aces and Anna Turner had 19 assists.

Donoho (2-0) plays in the Lady Wildcat Invitational on Saturday, which begins at 9 a.m.

Wellborn 2, Ohatchee 0 — The Lady Panthers squeaked by Ohatchee in the first game and dominated the second to sweep the Indians (25-22, 25-11) on Thursday.

The Panthers lost to Alexandria before defeating Ohatchee. Crystal Thomas led the team in kills with six and blocks with four. Megan Hubbard finished with five kills and five aces.

Shae Coley had five kills, and Sarah Hanson led the team with 20 assists.

Wellborn (1-1) plays in the Saks Tournament on Saturday.
