Jacksonville downs Ardmore to advance in volleyball

JACKSONVILLE — Jacksonville got past Ardmore on Thursday in the Class 4A sub-state tournament to advance to the Elite Eight.

The Golden Eagles won in four games 25-18, 25-15, 23-25, 25-12.

Katie Neisler led Jacksonville with 10 kills, three blocks and two aces.

Lana Bell had nine kills, four digs and two blocks. Nicole Penny had two kills, two digs and 30 assists.

Allender Doggett had eight kills. Haley Jackson added nine kills, five blocks and three aces.

Emily Torruella had six kills.

Jacksonville (43-10) plays Andalusia at 8 a.m. Wednesday at the Pelham Civic Complex.

CLASS 1A

Spring Garden 3, Marion County 1

— At Spring Garden, seniors Tara Mullinax and Kelsey Turner led Spring Garden to it’s sub-state win over Marion County’s Red Raiders. Turner recorded 32 assists, three aces and two digs as the Panthers won 25-19, 19-25, 25-14, 25-14. Mullinax had 25 kills, five digs and two aces.

“I thought we bounced back from what I thought was a poor performance in regionals to play really well,” Spring Garden coach Ricky Austin said.

Austin said the play of middle blocker Lynley Crabb helped the Panthers recover from a rough stretch in Game 2. Crabb had seven kills and six blocks. In Game 4, with Spring Garden clinging to an 11-10 lead, Austin said Crabb “had back-to-back blocks and back-to-back kills that helped us finish the game and the match.”

Jordan Sides added five kills and three aces. Katie Rickman had two assists and an ace.

Austin said Ivy Franklin continued to play well on the back row.

“Her defense was really good. She made a lot of good passes at crucial times to keep rallies going,” Austin said.

Spring Garden (28-16) meets Donoho (39-15) in the opening round of the Class 1A state tournament Wednesday at the Pelham Civic Complex.

The Panthers defeated the Falcons on the way to their 2007 state championship.

Class 2A

Pleasant Valley 3, Cold Springs 0 — At Pleasant Valley, the Lady Raiders swept Cold Springs easily winning 25-9, 25-9, 25-9 to earn another trip to the state tournament.

Jessie Kate Stewart led the way for Pleasant Valley with 12 kills and five digs.

Setter Ashley Bryant had 21 assists and eight digs. Morgan Smith had nine digs as did Jordan Luttrell who added three aces. Megan Strickland had five digs. Sierra Langley added four digs. Payton Lewis had three blocks and Jessica Boozer contributed with two.

The Lady Raiders (36-14) will face Isabella at 3:30 p.m. in the in the quarterfinals of the Elite Eight state championship tournament at the Pelham Civic Complex.

Class 3A

Winston County 3, Saks 0 — At Double Springs, Saks fell 3-0 to the No. 2 Winston County losing, 25-5, 25-16, 25-12 on the road.

Six-foot sophomore Taylor West paced the seventh-ranked Lady Wildcats with eight kills, a block and an ace. Setter Valentina Cuevas had 12 assists and Rebecca Bowen added nine digs.

Saks ended its season with a 32-13 record.
