Its roof and radio antenna damaged, Houston Cole Library remained closed Friday, but students can reserve materials and use “curb service” said Angie Finley, a JSU spokeswoman.
“A lot of students use the week of spring break to study and work on projects,” Finley said. “So we wanted to make sure they could get materials they might need.”
Finley said a temporary repair made the building waterproof, but officials will need to put together a bid package to fully repair or, potentially, replace the roof.
Finley said the library will likely be open before classes resume in April.
The other main building damaged in Monday’s storm, Campus Inn Apartments, also had a temporary roof replacement to protect it from water damage. Like the library, it will also need further repairs. Students living on the second floor of the building had the option of being assigned a temporary housing arrangement during construction.
“At this time, affected students are being allowed into their apartments only if they need to gather items needed during spring break,” Finley said. “They may return to the apartments after the residence halls reopen on March 31.”
Around noon Friday, the parking lot outside the apartments was mostly empty. A patchwork of doors on the second floor of the structure had signs telling students to stay out of the apartments while repairs were being made. Eric Johnson, a senior exercise science major at the university who lives on the first floor of the complex, said most people he knew had cleared out for spring break.
Johnson said he wasn’t at his apartment when the storm happened, which likely saved damage to his car.
“My parking spot is right here, and this is where the roof landed,” Johnson said, pointing to the remaining visible, scattered debris Friday. “You can see my friend’s car right here. Her mirror got knocked off.”
Finley said students living in the apartment who need to file insurance claims can do so for the remainder of the semester at the Housing Office at Bibb Graves Hall.
