PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The wait is over. Now the watch is on.
On Tuesday, officials from the Walter Payton Award, named for the former Jackson State and NFL great, named Jacksonville State quarterback Ryan Perrilloux to its preseason list of 20 players. Perrilloux, a former LSU standout and native of LaPlace, La., joins Alexandria product Chris Evans, who is now at Samford.
The award, which is the Football Championship Series version of the Heisman Trophy, was won last year by Appalachian State's Armanti Edwards, who returns this season.
Perrilloux was 187-for-297 passing for 2,318 yards in 2008, which was the third-highest in school history, but only earned him a second-team All-Ohio Valley Conference nod.
In 2007 with LSU, Perrilloux was named the Most Valuable Player in the SEC Championship game after leading the Tigers to a 21-14 win over Tennessee. He also helped the Tigers claim the FBS National Championship over Ohio State.
The watch list will be revised in October and again in November before the final ballot is announced.
