JACKSONVILLE — University of Tennessee at Chattanooga athletics department officials have said their football program is going to resume a four-year football series with Jacksonville State beginning next season, but JSU officials aren’t confirming anything.

UTC athletics director David Blackburn told the Chattanooga Times Free Press on Wednesday games have been scheduled for 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2019.

JSU officials, meanwhile, say there is no signed contract and until there is they have nothing to say.

According to media reports, the Gamecocks would travel to UTC’s Finley Stadium for the first two games of the deal, with the Mocs coming to JSU Stadium for the final two.

“It makes sense, and it beefed up our home schedule significantly,” Blackburn was quoted by the newspaper.

JSU athletics director Warren Koegel wouldn’t confirm the series. He told The Star Thursday night the schools were “in negotiations,” but there were no signed contracts.

“And I don’t release anything until there’s a signed contract,” he said.

Asked if that meant the series renewal was in jeopardy, he said, “If I don’t want to sign it, I won’t sign it.”

The Gamecocks are looking for two games for the 2014 season after UCF bailed on their contracted game. They were hoping to land a second big-money date to complement their $600,000 opener at Michigan State and a sixth home game.

The teams played eight times from 2004 through 2012, before UTC ended the series for other scheduling considerations.

“I was honest when I said I wanted to play other people,” UTC coach Russ Huesman told the newspaper. “Now we’ve got Jacksonville State for a four-game deal, and I think it all worked out really well.”

JSU coach Bill Clark said he was aware the Gamecocks were talking to several schools about future games but wasn’t aware of anything being finalized.
